Gryllus, or On Rhetoric — Aristotle

Written work

Gryllus, or On Rhetoric

Γρύλλος ἢ περὶ ῥητορικῆς

Busto de Aristóteles (Museo Nacional Romano, Palazzo Altemps)
byAristotle

A dialogue, perhaps Aristotle's earliest work, which discussed whether rhetoric is an art and criticised the teaching of Isocrates. According to Quintilian, it argued ingeniously that rhetoric is not an art, a position later nuanced in his Rhetoric.

Authorship note

A lost work, surviving only in fragments and testimonies preserved by later authors. It belongs to the “exoteric” writings, intended for a wide public, which Aristotle published in his lifetime and which antiquity read more than the treatises. Written after the death at Mantinea (362 BCE) of Gryllus, son of Xenophon, when funeral eulogies in his honour were proliferating (Diogenes Laertius II 55).
