Eudemus, or On the Soul
Εὔδημος ἢ περὶ ψυχῆς

A dialogue of consolation on the immortality of the soul, in the wake of Plato's Phaedo. The fragments tell of Eudemus's prophetic dream and present the soul's life in the body as an exile; they also record Silenus's verdict to King Midas that the best thing for man is not to be born and, next best, to die as soon as possible.

Authorship note
A lost work, surviving only in fragments and testimonies preserved by later authors. It belongs to the “exoteric” writings, intended for a wide public, which Aristotle published in his lifetime and which antiquity read more than the treatises. Dedicated to the memory of Eudemus of Cyprus, Aristotle's friend who died in Sicily around 354 BCE.
