On Interpretation (De interpretatione)

Περὶ ἑρμηνείας

Busto de Aristóteles (Museo Nacional Romano, Palazzo Altemps)
byAristotle

It studies the noun, the verb, affirmation and negation, and the relations between opposed propositions, the basis of the so-called square of opposition. It defines spoken words as symbols of affections of the soul and discusses modality (the possible and the necessary). Its chapter 9, on future contingents — whether it is already true or false that there will be a sea battle tomorrow — opened one of the longest debates in logic and theology, bound up with the question of freedom and divine foreknowledge.

Authorship note

A school treatise of the Aristotelian corpus, regarded as authentic. Like the other surviving treatises, it consists of Aristotle's own teaching materials rather than books meant for the public; the arrangement and titles largely derive from Andronicus of Rhodes's edition (first century BCE). Bekker 16a–24b.
