A handbook of dialectic: the art of reasoning from accepted opinions (endoxa) on any proposed subject and of avoiding self-contradiction while defending a thesis. It sets out the four predicables — definition, property, genus and accident —, the “places” or argument schemes, and the rules of the dialectical exercise of question and answer. It is a precious document of teaching in the Academy and a key text for rhetoric and the logic of argument.

Authorship note
A school treatise of the Aristotelian corpus, regarded as authentic. Like the other surviving treatises, it consists of Aristotle's own teaching materials rather than books meant for the public; the arrangement and titles largely derive from Andronicus of Rhodes's edition (first century BCE). Eight books; probably one of the earliest works, linked to the dialectical practice of the Academy. Bekker 100a–164b.
