Busto de Aristóteles (Museo Nacional Romano, Palazzo Altemps)
byAristotle

A continuation of the Ethics: if happiness is the end of the individual, the city is the community that makes it possible. Book I holds that the human being is by nature a political animal, endowed with speech, and studies the household, economics and — in pages unacceptable today — natural slavery. Book II criticises Plato's Republic and the constitutions of Sparta, Crete and Carthage; book III defines the citizen and classifies regimes into correct (monarchy, aristocracy, polity) and deviant (tyranny, oligarchy, democracy); books IV–VI, based on the 158 constitutions collected at the Lyceum, analyse the causes of revolutions and praise the mixed regime resting on the middle classes; books VII–VIII describe the ideal city and its education.

Authorship note

A school treatise of the Aristotelian corpus, regarded as authentic. Like the other surviving treatises, it consists of Aristotle's own teaching materials rather than books meant for the public; the arrangement and titles largely derive from Andronicus of Rhodes's edition (first century BCE). Eight books, probably composed at different times; the order of books VII–VIII and IV–VI has been debated since the nineteenth century. Bekker 1252a–1342b.
