Nicomachean Ethics
Ἠθικὰ Νικομάχεια

The most influential work of ethics in history. It starts from the question of the highest human good, which everyone calls happiness, and defines it as an activity of the soul in accordance with virtue over a complete life. It explains ethical virtue as habit and as a mean chosen according to right reason, analyses courage, temperance, liberality, magnanimity and justice, distinguishes the intellectual virtues — with practical wisdom at their centre —, studies incontinence and pleasure, and devotes two admirable books to friendship. Book X concludes that the happiest life is the contemplative one, in which a human being lives according to what is divine in him, and leads into the Politics.
Authorship note
A school treatise of the Aristotelian corpus, regarded as authentic. Like the other surviving treatises, it consists of Aristotle's own teaching materials rather than books meant for the public; the arrangement and titles largely derive from Andronicus of Rhodes's edition (first century BCE). Ten books; its name probably refers to Nicomachus, Aristotle's son or father, who may have edited it or to whom it may have been dedicated. Books V–VII are shared with the Eudemian Ethics. Bekker 1094a–1181b.
