Written work

On the Heavens (De caelo)

Περὶ οὐρανοῦ

Busto de Aristóteles (Museo Nacional Romano, Palazzo Altemps)
byAristotle

Aristotelian cosmology. The universe is one, finite, spherical and eternal; the heavenly bodies are made of a fifth element, aether, whose natural motion is circular, while the four sublunary elements move in straight lines upwards or downwards. It defends the sphericity of the Earth with observational arguments — the shadow in lunar eclipses, the change of visible stars when travelling — and its motionless position at the centre. Books III and IV deal with the elements, the heavy and the light.

Authorship note

A school treatise of the Aristotelian corpus, regarded as authentic. Like the other surviving treatises, it consists of Aristotle's own teaching materials rather than books meant for the public; the arrangement and titles largely derive from Andronicus of Rhodes's edition (first century BCE). Four books. Bekker 268a–313b.
