Resurrection — Leo Tolstoy

Written work

Resurrection

Воскресение

Lev Tolstói en Yásnaia Poliana (1908)
byLeo Tolstoy

Tolstoy's last novel. Prince Nekhlyudov, serving on a jury, recognises in the defendant Katyusha Maslova the girl he seduced and abandoned years before, who ended in prostitution. He resolves to atone by following her to Siberia. The novel is a relentless indictment of the courts, prisons, landownership and the official Church, whose prison mass it describes so starkly that the censor cut it. Its fees went to the Doukhobors' emigration to Canada.
