Tolstoy's earliest surviving literary attempt, written in Moscow in March 1851 and never finished. It sets out to narrate a single day with all the inner movements that accompany it — an evening party, a conversation with a married woman, the sleigh ride home — and already announces the minute psychological analysis of his work. Published in 1928.
