Two Old Men

Два старика

Lev Tolstói en Yásnaia Poliana (1908)
byLeo Tolstoy

Two old peasants set out on pilgrimage to Jerusalem. One, Elisha, stops in a famine-stricken village and spends his money saving a family; the other, Efim, reaches Jerusalem, but in the church sees Elisha in the holiest place and understands which of them did God's will. It belongs to the popular stories Tolstoy wrote after his conversion for the Posrednik press, in plain language and with the structure of a parable.
