The Repentant Sinner

Кающийся грешник

Lev Tolstói en Yásnaia Poliana (1908)
byLeo Tolstoy

Short parable: a man who sinned all his life repents at death and knocks at the gates of paradise. Peter, David and John refuse him, but he reminds them of their own falls and of John's words on love, and the gates open. Published in 1886. It belongs to the popular stories Tolstoy wrote after his conversion for the Posrednik press, in plain language and with the structure of a parable.
