«Byl», or true story. Part of the Azbuka cycle (1872–1875), the primers Tolstoy wrote for peasant children, included in the Fourth Russian Reader (1875). On a ship returning from a voyage round the world, a monkey snatches the captain's son's cap and climbs to the top of the mast; the boy follows and is left on the brink, and his father, aiming his gun at him, orders him to jump into the sea.
