Tolstoy wrote more than ten thousand surviving letters, filling thirty-one volumes (59–89) of the 90-volume complete works: to his family, to writers (Turgenev, Fet, Strakhov, Chekhov, Gorky), to disciples such as Chertkov, to peasants, to persecuted sectarians and to correspondents all over the world. They form a parallel autobiography and the main vehicle of his apostolate in the last thirty years.
