Emelyan and the Empty Drum

Работник Емельян и пустой барабан

Lev Tolstói en Yásnaia Poliana (1908)
byLeo Tolstoy

Folk-rooted tale: the tsar wants to take the labourer Emelyan's beautiful wife and sets him impossible tasks, which she helps him fulfil. The last is to bring "I know not what": an empty drum which, when beaten, draws the tsar's soldiers after it. Written in 1886 and published in 1891. It belongs to the popular stories Tolstoy wrote after his conversion for the Posrednik press, in plain language and with the structure of a parable.
