How the Little Devil Redeemed the Crust

Как чертенок краюшку выкупал

Lev Tolstói en Yásnaia Poliana (1908)
byLeo Tolstoy

A little devil steals a poor peasant's crust of bread, and the peasant, instead of cursing, says whoever took it must have needed it. To redeem his failure before the chief devil, the imp teaches the peasant to distil spirits and turns him into a drunkard. Tolstoy made it into the comedy The First Distiller. It belongs to the popular stories Tolstoy wrote after his conversion for the Posrednik press, in plain language and with the structure of a parable.
