A Grain as Big as a Hen's Egg

Зерно с куриное яйцо

Lev Tolstói en Yásnaia Poliana (1908)
byLeo Tolstoy

Children find an enormous grain of wheat and the tsar asks the old men where it grew. The oldest explains that in his day everyone lived by his own labour, without buying or selling or coveting another's land, and that is why it grew so. Published in 1886. It belongs to the popular stories Tolstoy wrote after his conversion for the Posrednik press, in plain language and with the structure of a parable.
