A Spark Neglected Burns the House

Упустишь огонь — не потушишь

Lev Tolstói en Yásnaia Poliana (1908)
byLeo Tolstoy

Story of two peasant neighbours, Ivan and Gavrila, whose quarrel over a hen's egg grows into lawsuits, blows and the fire that destroys the village. Only forgiveness, urged by the dying old father, stops the chain. Written in 1885. It belongs to the popular stories Tolstoy wrote after his conversion for the Posrednik press, in plain language and with the structure of a parable.
