Sophistical Refutations
Περὶ σοφιστικῶν ἐλέγχων

The first systematic catalogue of fallacies. It distinguishes thirteen kinds of apparent arguments, six dependent on language (equivocation, amphiboly, combination, division, accent, form of expression) and seven independent of it (accident, begging the question, consequent, false cause, many questions…), and teaches how to resolve them. It ends with an epilogue in which Aristotle claims to have created the theory of reasoning alone, without predecessors, and asks for indulgence for its gaps and gratitude for its discoveries.

Authorship note
A school treatise of the Aristotelian corpus, regarded as authentic. Like the other surviving treatises, it consists of Aristotle's own teaching materials rather than books meant for the public; the arrangement and titles largely derive from Andronicus of Rhodes's edition (first century BCE). It works as an appendix or ninth book of the Topics. Bekker 164a–184b.
