Tale. Part of the Azbuka cycle (1872–1875), the primers Tolstoy wrote for peasant children, included in the Second Russian Reader (1875). Two brothers find a stone whose inscription promises happiness to whoever takes a risk; the younger dares and becomes king, though he loses the kingdom, while the elder lives quietly; in the end both defend their choice.
