Kalpasūtra (Lives of the Jinas)

कप्पसुत्त (Kappasutta) / कल्पसूत्र (Kalpasūtra), también Pajjosavaṇākappa (Paryuṣaṇākalpa)

Busto de Mahāvīra, período kuṣāṇa (Museo de Chandigarh)
byMahāvīra

The eighth chapter of the Daśāśrutaskandha turned into an independent book, and the most copied and illustrated Jain text. It has three parts: the lives of the Jinas, above all Mahāvīra's —the transfer of the embryo, the fourteen dreams, renunciation, asceticism, omniscience and death at Pāvā—, the list of successors (sthavirāvalī) and the rules for the rainy-season retreat. It is read aloud every year during the festival of Paryuṣaṇa. The illuminated manuscripts from Gujarat of the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries are held in museums around the world.

Authorship note

Ascribed by the Śvetāmbara tradition to the master Bhadrabāhu (4th c. BCE); in its present form it is later and was closed with the Valabhī redaction, as its own § 148 indicates (980 or 993 years after Mahāvīra). The Digambaras do not recognise it and reject episodes such as the embryo transfer.
