The seventh Aṅga: the story of ten wealthy householders, led by the merchant Ānanda of Vāṇijagrāma, who take the twelve lay vows before Mahāvīra and withstand trials of their faith. It is the classical source on the ethics of non-monastic Jains and on the economic life of the time. Rudolf Hoernle edited and translated it into English (1885–1890).

Authorship note

Canonical compilation: according to the Śvetāmbara tradition it transmits Mahāvīra's teaching as recited by his disciple Sudharman to Jambū; it was written down at Valabhī (c. 453/466 CE) and contains strata of very different periods. Mahāvīra did not write it. The Digambaras regard the original Aṅgas as lost.
