Ācārāṅga (The Book of Conduct)
आयारंग (Āyāraṃga) / आचाराङ्ग (Ācārāṅga)
The first Aṅga and probably the oldest Jain text, in two parts. The first, in archaic prose and verse, sets out non-violence towards all beings —including earth, water, fire, air and plants— and the ascetic's discipline; its ninth chapter, the "Uvahāṇasuya", is the oldest account of Mahāvīra's austerities. The second, later part regulates monastic life and adds a biography of the master.

Authorship note
Canonical compilation: according to the Śvetāmbara tradition it transmits Mahāvīra's teaching as recited by his disciple Sudharman to Jambū; it was written down at Valabhī (c. 453/466 CE) and contains strata of very different periods. Mahāvīra did not write it. The Digambaras regard the original Aṅgas as lost.
