Busto de Mahāvīra, período kuṣāṇa (Museo de Chandigarh)
byMahāvīra

The fifth and longest Aṅga, in 41 books: thousands of questions put by Indrabhūti Gautama and others to Mahāvīra on the soul, karma, cosmology, death and rebirth, with his answers. Book 15 narrates the break with Gośāla, head of the Ājīvikas, and is a main source for the history of that school. It is the text that most directly presents Mahāvīra as a teacher in dialogue.

Authorship note

Canonical compilation: according to the Śvetāmbara tradition it transmits Mahāvīra's teaching as recited by his disciple Sudharman to Jambū; it was written down at Valabhī (c. 453/466 CE) and contains strata of very different periods. Mahāvīra did not write it. The Digambaras regard the original Aṅgas as lost.
