A compendium of the fundamental rules of monastic life in ten chapters, which tradition ascribes to Śayyambhava, who is said to have composed it to instruct quickly his son, ordained a monk with only a few months of life ahead. It begins with the verse "the doctrine is the supreme blessing: non-violence, restraint and austerity" and is the first text novices memorise.
