Menexenus
Μενέξενος

Socrates recites to Menexenus a funeral oration for Athenians fallen in war which, he says, Aspasia, Pericles' companion, taught him. It is at once an example of the genre and a parody of the patriotic rhetoric that embellishes Athenian history. The speech reaches as far as the King's Peace (386 BC).

Authorship note
Authentic according to most: Aristotle cites it (Rhetoric I 9 and III 14). Its parodic tone and the anachronism of making Aspasia speak of events after Socrates' death led some nineteenth-century critics to doubt it.
