Hippias Major
Ἱππίας μείζων

The sophist Hippias of Elis, pleased with his successes, is questioned by Socrates on what the beautiful (to kalon) is. Definitions are tried — a beautiful maiden, gold, the appropriate, the useful, the pleasure of sight and hearing — and all fail. It ends with the proverbial phrase: 'beautiful things are difficult'.

Authorship note
Disputed. Its authenticity was denied by much of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century scholarship; today most tend to accept it as an early work of Plato, but there is still no consensus.
