Hippias Minor — Plato

Written work

Hippias Minor

Ἱππίας ἐλάττων

Busto de Platón (Museos Capitolinos, MC 1377)
byPlato

After a display by Hippias on Homer, Socrates asks who is better, Achilles or the wily Odysseus, and leads the sophist to the paradoxical conclusion that one who errs voluntarily is better than one who does so involuntarily. The dialogue leaves the paradox open, as a provocation about the relation between knowledge and virtue.

Authorship note

Authentic: an Aristotelian reference (Metaphysics V 29, 1025a6) supports it, and it is now hardly disputed.
