Menexenus

Plato

Socrates recites to Menexenus a funeral oration for Athenians fallen in war which, he says, Aspasia, Pericles' companion, taught him. It is at once an example of the genre and a parody of the patriotic rhetoric that embellishes Athenian history. The speech reaches as far as the King's Peace (386 BC).
