In the Piraeus, after a festival, Socrates discusses what justice is. To see it writ large he imagines an ideal city with three classes, ruled by philosophers whose education culminates in knowledge of the Form of the Good. Its ten books contain the critique of poetry, the equal education of women guardians, the images of the sun, the line and the cave, the typology of degenerate regimes and the myth of Er on the choice of lives.
