Cratylus
Κρατύλος

Hermogenes holds that names are pure convention; Cratylus, a follower of Heraclitus, that names possess a natural correctness. Socrates examines both theses through deliberately exuberant etymologies and concludes that knowledge of things cannot be obtained from words, but only from the things themselves. The earliest surviving treatise on philosophy of language.
