Alcibiades II — Plato

Traditional attribution

Alcibiades II

Ἀλκιβιάδης β

Busto de Platón (Museos Capitolinos, MC 1377)
byPlato

Alcibiades is going to pray to the gods and Socrates warns him of the danger of asking for what is not good for him: without knowing what is best, a prayer may bring misfortune, as shown by those who prayed for power or children. He concludes that one must wait to learn how to behave towards gods and men. A short dialogue on prayer and ignorance.

Authorship note

Spurious according to most scholars: Athenaeus (XI 506c) already reports that some ascribed it to Xenophon; its language and doctrine date it after Plato, probably to the third century BC.
