Upadeśasāhasrī (A Thousand Teachings)
Adi Shankara
A treatise in two parts, one in prose (three chapters on how to teach a pupil) and one in verse (nineteen chapters). It is the only book by Śaṅkara that does not comment on another, and the best way to know his teaching method: the teacher leads the pupil through questions to discriminate between the conscious witness and what is observed. Sengaku Mayeda published its critical edition and the standard translation.
