Letter II (to Dionysius II)

Ἐπιστολή Β

Busto de Platón (Museos Capitolinos, MC 1377)
byPlato

It contains two famous passages: the 'riddle' about the King of all things, around whom all things are (312e), which the Neoplatonists read as a theology of three principles, and the claim that there is and will be no writing of Plato, since those bearing his name belong to 'a Socrates become beautiful and young' (314c).

Authorship note

Spurious according to the great majority of scholars. It is regarded as an ancient forgery, though it was much read by the Platonists.
