Socrates asks a companion what law is and proposes that law wishes to be the discovery of what is. The dialogue culminates in praise of Minos, king of Crete, as the best lawgiver, taught by Zeus. It serves as a prologue to the Laws, which are set precisely in Crete.

Authorship note
Spurious or doubtful: most consider it the work of a fourth-century BC imitator, though some scholars (Leo Strauss among them) have read it as genuine.
