Socrates and an anonymous companion discuss what love of gain is: if everyone loves the good and gain is a good, all would be lovers of gain. It includes a digression on Hipparchus, son of Peisistratus, presented as a wise ruler who carved moral maxims on the herms along the roads of Attica.

Authorship note

Spurious according to the majority view, although it belongs to Thrasyllus' collection and was accepted in antiquity; it is regarded as an early work of the Academy or of a Socratic writer.
