Charmides
Χαρμίδης

Just back from the battle of Potidaea, Socrates talks with the young Charmides — Plato's maternal uncle — and with Critias, his cousin, both future members of the Thirty. They seek what sophrosyne (temperance, soundness of mind) is and reach the idea of a knowledge of itself and of other knowledges, which proves problematic. The shadow of their later tyranny gives the dialogue a bitter irony.
