Busto de Platón (Museos Capitolinos, MC 1377)
byPlato

Socrates approaches the young Alcibiades, about to enter Athenian politics, and shows him that he does not know what is just or advantageous. To govern others one must first care for oneself, and the self is the soul; the soul knows itself by looking into another soul, as the eye sees itself in the pupil of another eye. It is the great ancient reading of 'know thyself'.

Authorship note

Disputed. Antiquity held it genuine and the Neoplatonists placed it at the start of the course of study; since Schleiermacher (1809) many critics have considered it the work of a pupil in the Academy. The question remains open today, and part of current scholarship again defends its authenticity.
