Zhuangzi, ch. 20: "The Mountain Tree" (Shanmu)

《莊子·山木》

Zhuangzi en el álbum de retratos de soberanos sabios y ministros virtuosos
byZhuangzi

A tree is saved by being useless and a goose dies for not knowing how to cackle: Zhuangzi places himself "between the useful and the useless". It includes his visit to the King of Wei in patched clothes, the chain of cicada, mantis and magpie in the Diaoling park, the parable of the empty boat and Confucius besieged between Chen and Cai.

Authorship note

Outer chapter (waipian). Not by Zhuang Zhou, even though the book circulates under his name: it belongs to the schools that claimed him between the 4th and 2nd centuries BCE, and its present form is that of Guo Xiang's recension (c. 300 CE). Graham assigns it to the "School of Zhuangzi", the followers closest to the inner chapters.
