Zhuangzi, ch. 3: "The Secret of Caring for Life" (Yangsheng zhu)
《莊子·養生主》

Short and central. It begins from the observation that life has a limit and knowledge has none, and proposes following the middle course. Its centrepiece is Cook Ding, who carves oxen without nicking his blade in nineteen years because he follows the natural interstices. It also includes the one-footed commander, the marsh pheasant and Qin Shi's mourning for Lao Dan, closing with the image of fire passing from log to log.

Authorship note
Inner chapter (neipian). Even before Guo Xiang (c. 300 CE), tradition attributed the seven inner chapters to Zhuang Zhou himself, and most specialists (Graham, Liu Xiaogan) see in them the oldest and most personal layer of the book. Still, the titles and grouping are by later editors, they contain some additions, and Esther Klein (2010) has shown there is no evidence they circulated as a block before the Han.
