It asks who moves heaven and earth, describes the Yellow Emperor's music at Lake Dongting and gathers several meetings of Confucius with Lao Dan, who reproaches him for clinging to the footprints of the ancients. It contains the image of the straw dogs and that of the ugly woman who imitates the beautiful Xi Shi's frown.

Authorship note

Outer chapter (waipian). Not by Zhuang Zhou, even though the book circulates under his name: it belongs to the schools that claimed him between the 4th and 2nd centuries BCE, and its present form is that of Guo Xiang's recension (c. 300 CE). Graham places it in the "Syncretist" layer, of early Han date, which combines the Dao with Confucian and Legalist elements.
