Zhuangzi, ch. 26: "External Things" (Waiwu)

《莊子·外物》

Zhuangzi en el álbum de retratos de soberanos sabios y ministros virtuosos
byZhuangzi

External things have no certainty. Zhuangzi, poor, asks to borrow grain and answers an empty promise with the fable of the fish in the dry rut; Confucians rob a tomb while reciting the Book of Odes; Huizi learns the usefulness of the ground one does not tread on. It ends with the fish trap forgotten once the fish is caught.

Authorship note

Miscellaneous chapter (zapian). Not by Zhuang Zhou, even though the book circulates under his name: it belongs to the schools that claimed him between the 4th and 2nd centuries BCE, and its present form is that of Guo Xiang's recension (c. 300 CE). Heterogeneous material: Graham identifies in it fragments related to the inner chapters alongside school additions.
