Zhuangzi, ch. 8: "Webbed Toes" (Pianmu)
《莊子·駢拇》

It compares the benevolence and righteousness of the Confucians to webbed toes or a sixth finger: superfluous additions to human nature. It censures moralists, rhetoricians and refined musicians alike, and concludes that the saintly Bo Yi and Robber Zhi, one for fame and one for gain, were lost in the same way.

Authorship note
Outer chapter (waipian). Not by Zhuang Zhou, even though the book circulates under his name: it belongs to the schools that claimed him between the 4th and 2nd centuries BCE, and its present form is that of Guo Xiang's recension (c. 300 CE). Graham attributes it to the "Primitivist", an anonymous author of about the end of the Qin (c. 205 BCE) who idealises life before civilisation.
