It deals with how to survive alongside power. Confucius dissuades Yan Hui from reforming the tyrant of Wei and teaches him the "fasting of the heart"; then come the counsels to the Duke of She and to Yan He, the mantis trying to stop a cart, the sacred oak that owes its long life to being useless, Shu the hunchback and the song of the madman of Chu: "all know the use of the useful, none the use of the useless".

Authorship note

Inner chapter (neipian). Even before Guo Xiang (c. 300 CE), tradition attributed the seven inner chapters to Zhuang Zhou himself, and most specialists (Graham, Liu Xiaogan) see in them the oldest and most personal layer of the book. Still, the titles and grouping are by later editors, they contain some additions, and Esther Klein (2010) has shown there is no evidence they circulated as a block before the Han.
