Zhuangzi, ch. 1: "Free and Easy Wandering" (Xiaoyao you)

《莊子·逍遙遊》

Zhuangzi en el álbum de retratos de soberanos sabios y ministros virtuosos
byZhuangzi

It opens with the fish Kun turning into the bird Peng and flying to the southern ocean while the cicada and dove mock its effort. It plays with scales of size and time to relativise viewpoints, presents the perfect man "without self", Xu You refusing the empire, and ends with the dialogues with Huizi on the giant gourd and the useless tree.

Authorship note

Inner chapter (neipian). Even before Guo Xiang (c. 300 CE), tradition attributed the seven inner chapters to Zhuang Zhou himself, and most specialists (Graham, Liu Xiaogan) see in them the oldest and most personal layer of the book. Still, the titles and grouping are by later editors, they contain some additions, and Esther Klein (2010) has shown there is no evidence they circulated as a block before the Han.
