Humiliated and Insulted
Униженные и оскорблённые

His first long novel after exile, published in the Dostoevsky brothers' journal. A young writer, Ivan Petrovich, narrates Natasha's unhappy love for the weak Alyosha, son of the cynical Prince Valkovsky, and the story of the child Nellie, the prince's abandoned daughter. A serial melodrama, it nonetheless introduces the first great intellectual villain of his work.
