The Beggar Boy at Christ's Christmas Tree

Мальчик у Христа на ёлке

Retrato de Fiódor Dostoievski, por Vasili Perov
byFyodor Dostoevsky

A Christmas story from A Writer's Diary (January 1876): a starving child who has left the cellar where his mother lies dying wanders St Petersburg on Christmas Eve, gazes through windows at lighted trees and freezes to death in a courtyard; he wakes at Christ's Christmas party, where other dead children await him. Dostoevsky presents it as an invention prompted by a beggar boy he saw in the street.
