The House of the Dead
Записки из Мёртвого дома

An account of the prison years at Omsk ascribed to a fictional narrator, Alexander Goryanchikov, condemned for killing his wife, to get past the censor. It describes the labour, the floggings, the hospital, the Christmas festivities with the convicts' theatre and, above all, the humanity of the common prisoners. Tolstoy especially admired it, and it was the first literary testimony of the Siberian penal system.
