Inspired by the murder of the student Ivanov by Sergei Nechayev's revolutionary group (1869), it portrays a provincial town shaken by a nihilist conspiracy. Beside the satire of the liberals of the 1840s (Stepan Verkhovensky) and their revolutionary sons (Pyotr Verkhovensky) stand Kirillov, who wants to kill himself to become God, and Stavrogin, the man who can neither believe nor stop believing. The chapter 'At Tikhon's', with Stavrogin's confession, was rejected by the editor and published in 1922.
