The Double
Двойник. Петербургская поэма

Subtitled 'A Petersburg Poem', it tells how the clerk Yakov Golyadkin, timid and hungry for recognition, meets a man identical to himself who gradually takes over his post, his friends and his life, until he is committed to an asylum. It baffled the critics and Belinsky; Dostoevsky revised it for the 1866 edition. It is his first exploration of the divided consciousness that would dominate his great novels.
