The Idiot
Идиот

Prince Lev Myshkin returns to Russia after years of treatment for epilepsy in Switzerland: a man without guile, compassionate to the point of absurdity, Dostoevsky's attempt to portray 'a positively beautiful man'. In St Petersburg he is caught between two women, the proud Aglaya and the humiliated Nastasya Filippovna, and the passion of the merchant Rogozhin. His goodness saves no one: the novel ends in murder and in the prince's madness. Written abroad between 1867 and 1869.
